In most countries you can get public records on almost anybody. Just go down to your local office where the records are kept. You can obtain information on properties, people's residences, arrests and a whole lot more. Problem is - it's local. To find out information on people outside your area you need to go where they live. And there is often a steep cost for the local government to copy records.

There are companies out there that specialize in gathering local records and consolidate them. They also offer tracking and cross-reference services. So when people move - they would have a record of those moves.

You would want to do a background check for several reasons. Before hiring anybody you should run a background check. Especially if you are hiring for sensitive jobs such as accounting and child care. If you are going into business with a partner, you want to know everything you can about the person. Even if you are seeking employment - and you will work closely with a specific person - why not find out if there are any ghosts hiding in the closet.

How about if you are dating and want to marry someone? Or if your kids are marrying - you might want to know what's out there on your potential family member.

You might also do a background check on yourself... if for no other reason than to see if there are any incorrect information.

Here's a site with more information and access to public record data in the US:
